The Bull Shot

After a long hibernation, I thought it was time to write a new post, this time on that much misunderstood and very obscure drink, the Bull Shot.

For many, their only experience with th drink would be movie Caddyshack, when Rodney Dangerfield asks the bartender of he can make a Bull Shot, to which the bartender replies, "Can you make a shoe smell?"

The Bull Shot was invented in Detroit at the Caucus Club in 1952. John Hurley, an advertising executive at Batten, Barton, Durstine & Osborn, had been hired by Campbell's Soup to increase the sales of their canned beef bullion. Also at thise time vodka was growing in popularity. Hurley who was a regular at the Caucus Club, suggested that the bullion be used to create a savory version of the Bloody Mary.

The Bull Shot quickly grew to become an instant hit with the Detroit Free Press dubbing it "the latest luncheon cocktail fad."

While it can be hard to find today in most bars, it is quite easy to make at home. You will need the following:

Vodka

Beef Broth

Lemon

Worcestershire Sauce

Tabasco

Take a highball glass and fill it with ice. Squeeze the lemon in the glass, leaving the lemon in the glass. Add a tablespoon of Worcestershire Sause and a drop of Tabasco. Fill the glass halfway with beff broth and vodka and stir.

Hope you enjoy this savory brunchtime drink as much as I do.
